This drawing depicts La Procesión del Harapo (the “Rag Procession”) on the Segovia Bridge, on the way to Communion at the Ermita de San Isidro. It’s a fictional recreation by the artist, portraying a scene in which pious, well-meaning women would gather the poor and beggars from the streets of Madrid to accompany them in procession to the Ermita de San Isidro, where they would receive Communion and be given clothing and food. This is a fictional scene, not historically documented, though grounded in real practices of 19th and 20th century Madrid, when pious women, nuns, and upper-class ladies assisted the poor and beggars both in the streets and in religious spaces. They gave out food, soup, and bread in convents, churches, and charity dining halls. These women followed a religious tradition of helping the hungry in a city marked by widespread poverty. This drawing is based on several photographs, primarily one with a matching background from 1906 by Jean Lacoste.

This is an original charcoal drawing from the Viejo Madrid series — a body of work on paper depicting historic Madrid streets, buildings, people, and everyday scenes that have since disappeared. Rooted in the artist’s own childhood memories of the city in the 1980s, each drawing is a dreamed, fictional reconstruction of a vanished Madrid. Hand-signed original artwork, sold with a Certificate of Authenticity, available directly from the artist’s studio.
