This drawing depicts the appearance of Jacob Marley before Ebenezer Scrooge in his room, in Stave One of A Christmas Carol. The composition brings together two facing vignettes: Ebenezer Scrooge, alone beside the fireplace, eating his gruel on the cold and solitary Christmas Eve, and the ghost of Jacob Marley appearing before him, burdened with the chains that symbolize the consequences of his life. The scene recreates the moment when Ebenezer Scrooge’s quiet solitude is interrupted by the terrifying appearance of his former business partner.

This original charcoal drawing is part of the illustrated edition of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, a project that began after Mario Jodra was awarded the 5th Edelvives International Illustration Prize. Following this recognition, Edelvives commissioned him to create the illustrations for its new edition of the book, published in 2025 with a translation by Alejandro Tobar. The edition offers a new visual, expressive and socially engaged interpretation of Dickens’s characters and settings, with particular attention to social contrasts and Ebenezer Scrooge’s inner transformation. Original artwork, signed by hand, accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity and available directly from the artist’s studio.
