This illustration captures the narrator’s first arrival at the House of Usher — riding for hours through a bleak, lifeless landscape until the house appears at dusk, its walls reflected in a still, dark lake alongside a few dead trees. In the piece, the two Usher siblings are shown apart, each in a separate window, with the crack running down the façade — the same fracture that will ultimately split the house in two — placed between them.
