The illustration depicts Werther’s dream-like vision of the town of Wahlheim (Wetzlar) destroyed by a giant wave — a premonition entangled with his own thoughts of death. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s “The Sorrows of Young Werther” (1774) launched the Sturm und Drang movement and laid the foundation for German Romanticism, with its raw emotion and tragic hero shaping a generation of European literature.
